After snapping a photo of the Milky Way’s monster black hole, scientists dream of videos

Fresh off revealing its first image of the black hole at the center of our galaxy, the Event Horizon Telescope is ready to take its next steps by capturing movies of gas flowing turbulently onto a black hole. The two black hole images the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) has produced so far — that of Sagittarius A* in the Milky Way and that of the black hole at the center of the galaxy M87 — are snapshots in time. Black holes are constantly churning as gas orbits around it surface,…

NASA’s Lucy asteroid probe will watch the Super Flower Blood Moon lunar eclipse from deep space tonight

Like a flashlight beam penetrating the dark, the moon’s reflected sunlight will blink on and off during a lunar eclipse just visible by an asteroid-bound spacecraft. A NASA spacecraft called Lucy plans to take a side view of the Super Flower Blood Mmoon lunar eclipse of May 15 on its way to visit clusters of asteroids that orbit the sun at about the same distance as Jupiter, called Trojans. The spacecraft, which launched in October 2021, is on a path back to Earth for a gravity assist to the outer…

The moon photobombs a sunset in this otherworldly solar eclipse image

A collage of 21 images shows the eclipsed sun setting over the Atacama Desert in Chile on April 30, 2022. (Image credit: P. Horálek/ESO) On April 30, skywatchers gathered to watch the sunset over Atacama Desert, Chile — and to witness a much rarer phenomenon.  Before the sun passed below the horizon, the moon intercepted Earth’s view, temporarily blocking a small portion of the sun’s circle in the first partial solar eclipse of 2022. That phenomenon is on display in a fascinating collage, released by the European Southern Observatory (ESO)…

On This Day In Space: May 14, 1973: NASA launches Skylab space station

On May 13, 1964, NASA launched the second abort test of the Apollo spacecraft. This uncrewed mission would demonstrate that the launch escape system could safely eject the Apollo command module in case of an emergency.  For the first test, the command module ejected just above the launchpad 15 seconds after liftoff. But the second time it stayed on top of the rocket for 44 seconds. It reached an altitude of almost 30,000 feet, which was six times higher than it went during the first test.  The Little Joe II…

Tiny Snake Island has hosted some fierce fighting during the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as new satellite photos show. Snake Island is a 42-acre (17 hectares) speck of land in the Black Sea, about 28 miles (45 kilometers) off the Romanian coast. Russia captured it from Ukraine in late February, a few days after the invasion began, but the battle for control of the strategically important island continues. On Thursday (May 12), for example, Maxar Technologies’ GeoEye-1 spacecraft snapped a series of photos of Snake Island, one of which appears…
